Under $200 cyc infinity DIY budget friendly wall for photography -backdrop ideas

Hey everyone! It’s Christal  from Virginia Photos and Films, back with another exciting DIY project for those of you on a budget.

Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph headshots for a local women's lacrosse team, but there was one catch – they were working with a very strict budget.

So, I got creative and decided to build a cyclical wall, also known as a CYC wall or infinity wall, right in my garage studio using materials from Home Depot.

And guess what? I did it for only $16 each (some sites say $12) ! Yes, you heard that right! With three (lol four) boards. Not bad, right? Let’s break down how I pulled this off.

Step 1: Measure the Space

The first thing I did was measure the space in my garage. Knowing the dimensions is crucial as it helps you determine how many boards you’ll need and how to position them effectively to fit the entire lacrosse team in a 13 by 10 spot.

Step 2: Find the Right Materials

Next, I headed to Home Depot where I found some sturdy boards. These will serve as the base for my cyc wall.

Step 3: Assemble the Wall

With the boards in hand, my husband helped me lay them down. We used gaff tape underneath to ensure they could slide together smoothly without any gaps.

Step 4: Cutting the Boards

He then used a saw to cut one of the boards to the appropriate size. If you don’t have a saw at home, you can always use a hand tool or ask for assistance at the store.

Step 5: Set Up

After everything was cut and taped together, we positioned the boards on the ground to create the cyc wall effect. This seamless backdrop is perfect for headshots, providing a clean and professional look.

Excited for the Results!

I can’t wait to share the results from today’s shoot with the lacrosse team. It’s going to be awesome fitting the whole team in this compact space, and I’m excited to see how the cyc wall enhances their branding and marketing materials.

Stay tuned for the final photos, and if you’re also on a budget, I highly recommend trying this DIY cyc wall project in your own space. It’s a simple solution that can make a huge difference in your photography!

Now, let’s talk lighting. For this shoot, I kept it straightforward with one softbox positioned right here and two Godox 8200 lights on either side, each with a dome on top. This setup allowed the light to bounce off the white surfaces, creating a beautiful giant white box effect. It made the editing process a breeze!
